Questions & Answers
Frequently Asked Questions
The questions I hear most often — answered the way I'd answer them in person.
Do I need a big yard to start a garden?
Not at all. Some of the most productive gardens I've seen were on apartment balconies. A single 4×4 raised bed will give you more vegetables than you expect in your first season. Start small, get the hang of it, and expand when you're ready.
What's the best time of year to start?
That depends on where you live, but for most people: spring, after your last frost date. If you want to start earlier — and you should, because it's exciting — you can begin seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before that date. I walk through the exact timing in the book.
I killed everything I've ever tried to grow. Is this book actually for me?
Yes. Especially you. The early chapters are specifically designed for people who've had bad experiences, because I want to address what went wrong before we try again. Most 'plant killers' are just working with wrong timing, wrong soil, or wrong expectations — all of which are fixable.
What kind of gardening does the book cover?
Primarily food gardening — vegetables, herbs, and a few edible flowers. There's also a chapter on mixing ornamentals with edibles, because a garden that's only productive and never beautiful isn't very inspiring.
Does the book cover raised beds, in-ground, or containers?
All three, with honest pros and cons for each. I use all three myself depending on what I'm growing, and I help you figure out which makes the most sense for your space and goals.
How is this different from just reading gardening blogs?
Blog posts are written one topic at a time, often by different people with different approaches. This book is one cohesive, tested system — everything works together because it all came from the same garden, the same experiments, and the same lessons. You don't have to reconcile conflicting advice.
Is there a digital version?
Not yet — but it's on the list. Right now the book is available in print only. Sign up for the email list and you'll be the first to know when a digital edition is available.
Can I contact you with a question that isn't answered here?
Absolutely. Use the contact page, or if you'd rather chat in real time, the Tidio widget in the corner of the screen connects directly to me during business hours.
More FAQs will be managed via Sanity CMS once content is entered in Week 2.
